Views from the City: New National Park Designation by Julia Lisa and Mhairi McMillan

Scotland is getting a new National Park! The Scottish Government has pledged to designate a new National Park by 2026 as part of its plans to build a greener and fairer Scotland. Consultations have taken place, and the nomination process for groups wishing to nominate their area for National Park status is open. Whilst consultations received national interest, responses were largely contributed from those in rural areas. As most Scottish residents live in the central belt, understanding how these voices view and value National Parks is an important determination in the establishment of a new National Park.

A team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh, including the authors of this blog, set out to conduct in-depth interviews with city residents from Glasgow and Edinburgh to explore their perspectives on National Parks. This consultation took place in March 2023, the results were presented in a report and public presentation at Scottish Parliament in April 2023.

Quotes from Glasgow and Edinburgh Residents on their perspectives of National Parks and green spaces.

How do city residents view National Parks? A key outcome was that Scotland’s current National Parks are deeply valued by those residing in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Those interviewed shared stories and memories that conveyed the pride and comfort they receive from Scotland’s nature. The opportunities to connect with others and with nature herself, improve mental and physical health, and as quiet havens for relaxation and contemplation are central to how they engage with our National Parks. Participants expressed that Loch Lomond and The Trossachs and The Cairngorms National Parks are places that add to the texture of life in Scotland and are deeply treasured. They emphasised the importance of preserving and improving these culturally important areas so they can continue to be enjoyed by current and future generations. The designation of a new national park can add to this already rich natural heritage present in Scotland.
